Hygiene, Scale & Polish

Remove hardened tartar and staining - and protect your gums.

A fresh start for your mouth

However well you brush, hardened deposits of tartar (calculus) build up over time in places a brush can't clean — especially behind the lower front teeth and around the gum line. Tartar can't be brushed away; it needs professional removal.

What is a scale and polish?

  1. Scaling removes tartar and plaque from above and just below the gum line, using an ultrasonic scaler (which vibrates deposits away with a water spray) and fine hand instruments.
  2. Polishing smooths the tooth surfaces and removes surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking — leaving your teeth feeling wonderfully smooth and clean.

Why it matters

Tartar is covered in bacteria that inflame the gums — it's the main driver of gum disease, the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Regular scaling, combined with good home care, keeps gums healthy, breath fresh and teeth brighter.

Does it hurt? Most patients find it completely comfortable. If your gums are inflamed or teeth sensitive, tell us — we'll go gently, and we can numb the area if needed. Gums that bleed during scaling are a sign it was needed, and they heal quickly afterwards.

Aftercare

  • Your gums may feel slightly tender for a day — warm salt-water rinses soothe them.
  • Keep up daily brushing and interdental cleaning to slow the return of tartar.
  • Cut down smoking and staining drinks to keep the polish looking its best.
