A new lease of life for a damaged tooth
A crown (or "cap") is a custom-made cover that fits over a weakened tooth, restoring its
strength, shape and appearance. We provide the latest cosmetic crowns alongside
traditional NHS options.
When is a crown needed?
- A tooth heavily broken down by decay or large old fillings
- A cracked tooth that needs holding together
- After root canal treatment, to protect the tooth
- Discoloured or misshapen teeth, as part of a smile makeover
- To anchor a bridge
Types of crown
Porcelain-bonded-to-metal crowns combine strength with a tooth-coloured finish
and are the standard NHS option for visible teeth. All-ceramic cosmetic crowns give
the most natural, translucent, metal-free finish for front teeth. Gold or metal crowns
remain the most durable choice for hidden back teeth. We'll recommend the right one for your tooth,
your bite and your budget.
What happens?
- Preparation visit: the tooth is numbed and shaped, an impression is taken, and
a temporary crown fitted while yours is made.
- The lab crafts your crown, matched to the shade of your own teeth.
- Fitting visit: we check the fit, appearance and bite, then cement it
permanently. It should look and feel like your own tooth.
Caring for your crown: crowns can last 10–15 years or more,
but the tooth underneath can still decay at the join — so brush along the gum line and clean
between teeth daily. Note that recementing crowns and bridges now carries an NHS charge unless you
are exempt.
