Filling the gap — permanently

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with false teeth anchored to the natural teeth either side of the gap. Unlike a denture, a bridge is fixed in place — it doesn't come out, and it looks, feels and works like your own teeth.

Why replace a missing tooth?

• Neighbouring teeth drift and tilt into the gap, upsetting your bite
• The opposing tooth can over-erupt into the space
• Chewing shifts to other teeth, overloading them
• Gaps in your smile can knock your confidence

Types of bridge

A conventional bridge uses crowns on the teeth either side of the gap, fused to the replacement tooth — strong and long-lasting, ideal where those teeth would benefit from crowns anyway. A resin-bonded ("Maryland") bridge glues a wing to the back of a neighbouring tooth with minimal drilling — a very conservative option, especially for front teeth. We'll advise which suits your mouth.

What happens?

1. The supporting teeth are prepared and an impression taken.
2. A temporary bridge protects the area while the lab makes yours, shade-matched to your teeth.
3. The finished bridge is checked and cemented in place.
