Children's Dentistry

Free NHS dental care for children, supported by Scotland's Childsmile programme.

Happy little smiles

At our practice we pride ourselves on excellent quality, affordable NHS dental care for the whole family — and children are at the heart of that. NHS dental care for children in Scotland is free, and getting kids comfortable in the dental chair early sets them up for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

When should my child first visit?

As soon as their first teeth appear — ideally by their first birthday. Early visits are short and fun: a ride in the chair, a count of the teeth, and a sticker. The goal is familiarity, so the dentist never becomes scary.

Childsmile

We support Childsmile, Scotland's national programme to improve children's dental health. Through Childsmile your child can receive:

  • Fluoride varnish applications from age two — a quick, painless coating that strengthens enamel and cuts decay significantly (see fluoride varnish)
  • Free toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste
  • Tailored advice on toothbrushing, weaning and healthy snacks

Caring for children's teeth at home

  • Brush twice a day as soon as the first tooth appears — a smear of fluoride toothpaste under 3, a pea-sized amount from 3–6.
  • Supervise brushing until at least age 7, and encourage spitting, not rinsing.
  • Only water or plain milk in bottles and cups; keep juice and sweets to mealtimes.
  • Never put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
Baby teeth matter. They hold the space for adult teeth, and decay in baby teeth hurts just as much. Look after them from day one.
